About Legacy Cannon

We are Legacy Cannon

The Legacy Cannon story all started nearly 40 years ago. When I was a little boy, we always had this beautiful cannon sitting in our living room and I wondered where exactly it came from. Well, it all started when my father, his brother, and brother in-law decided they wanted to create three identical black powder cannons. They chose exotic wood from Fiji, brass hardware, and a brass barrel 22 inches long with a 1 inch bored hole. All together the cannon weighed about 40 pounds, which made it light enough to travel and big enough to make a loud boom! Every year on 4th of July, we celebrated our American heritage by shooting off the cannon in salute to all the men and women who have fought to keep us safe in this beautiful country. It's these moments I cherish so much with my family, that it inspired me to build one of my own and continue the legacy. Of course mine had to be bigger, and in 2004 I set out to do just that! Naturally, I also chose exotic wood, but picked the African Paddock, unique for its natural beauty. I also mimicked the traditional naval inspired carriage design that my dad and his brothers created for their cannons. The 30 inch long barrel was sand casted and then nickel plated and bored with a 1 and 5/8 inch bore; the perfect size for a golf ball. It was a beautiful masterpiece with only one huge flaw; it weighed about 120 pounds! Not very convenient or practical, but a beautiful beast either way.  As the years past, I always dreamed about building more cannons, but never had a chance to get around to it. In 2014, my now beautiful wife, did a local antique show called Scott's Antiques. She had a booth filled with vintage nicknacks and furniture we built together by recycling and repurposing old and rusty items. On the last day of the very long four day show, she encouraged me to bring the cannon along. I remember her reminding me that maybe someone else also would love to build a legacy with their father, but not have the artisan skills to do so. So, I listened to her advice and figured at least I can get feedback on what people thought of it. We loaded it into the truck, hauled the beast all the way to Scotts, placed it in the very front of the booth. To our utter surprise we had more people stop by our booth in just one day, than the three previous days combined! We soaked up all the feedback that day and the overall consensus was, "I love it, but do you make a much smaller one? Maybe even one I can put on my desk?" So that's what we set out to do ever since that day.

David Harris black powder cannon handcrafted and american made

Legacy Cannon has been three years in the making. We've been working tirelessly to perfect each cannon. Each one is made to order and built right here in America by my very hands. We decided to start with a much smaller 8 inch barrel with a .50 cal bored hole, which only weighs a total of 3 and a half pounds and sitting on a beautiful zebra exotic wood carriage.  We buy used metal military issued boxes and custom fit them with our allen bolt with rubber expansion plug, which fits inside the barrel and keeps the cannon in place while traveling. The Legacy Cannon box also gives one plenty of room for storing our additional accessory kit and the box is also water resistant! To us, a Legacy Cannon is not just another toy or antique replica, but a conversation starter and something for family and friends to love and bond over. We take pride in our cannons and offer a limited lifetime warranty with each one, because we build something that lasts and can be handed down in the family.

On May 13, 2016, I married Lieze, my beautiful wife and partner for life. We celebrated our marriage with an amazing beach wedding and reception on a pirate ship with its own naval cannons. There is where I handed down my first Legacy Cannons to each one of my brothers so all three of us too can have matching cannons, just like my father and his brothers did nearly 40 years ago.

Legacy Cannon is truly a gift for everyone to enjoy that can be handed down for generations to come, to celebrate and love as we love each other.

My mother always told me that as you go through life, no matter what you do, or how you do it, you leave a little footprint, and that's your legacy.

When you buy something made by a person, there is something special there, and you feel it. The consciousness with which a thing is made is often more important than the thing itself.

I think people are so prone to buy gift cards these days because they undervalue the importance of a gift. It's not just another material thing. It's an opportunity to show someone how special they are to you; to say "i love you" without actually uttering the words.
